Bjorg Lambrecht, the 22-year old Belgian cyclist, died after a crash during the stage 3 of the ongoing cycle race, Tour de Pologne on 5th August 2019.
According to the sources, the Lotto-Soudal rider, Bjorg Lambrecht crashed around 60 miles before the finishing line of the Monday’s stage i.e., Chorzow to Zabrze in Poland.
Following the unfortunate crash, the renowned Belgian Cyclist was taken to the hospital by helicopter. However, Bjorg died of his injuries during the operation.
Lotto-Soudal team-mates of Bjorg Lambrecht confirmed his death & tweeted that Bjorg’s death is the biggest tragedy possible that could happen to his family, friends & team-mates.
The Tour de Pologne further declared Bjorg Lambrecht death as an unexplainable mishap on the Monday’s stage of the cycle tour. The organizers conveyed their heartfelt condolences to Bjorg’s family, friends, team & the entire cycling community.
Insight into the Tragic Death of Bjorg Lambrecht
Czeslaw Lang, the director of Tour de Pologne, later threw some light on the fatal accident of Lambrecht. He said that the point where the accident occurred was not a high-speed descent rather a straight & wide road.
He observed Bjorg getting off the asphalt after a moment of hesitation & the mishap took place. The injuries were serious therefore a helicopter & an ambulance were called. He was transported to the hospital; however he died of his injuries during the operation.
As per sources, Tour de Pologne was the second season of the WorldTour the Belgian Cyclist, Bjorg was participating in. He had been considered as one of the most promising young talents of Belgium.
He has won the prestigious Liege-Bastogne-Liege Race for the Under-23 Version in year 2017. Not only this, he also completed the U23 World Championships last year & stood second.
Tour de Pologne Suspended – the Cyclist Community Paid Tribute to Bjorg
In order to pay tribute to the deceased Belgian Cyclist, Bjorg Lambrecht, racing in the Tour de Pologne was adjourned on 6th August 2019.
The Lotto-Soudal team-mates of Bjorg observed a minute’s silence as they came across the finish line of race in a neutralized fourth stage.
The tribute began with a minute’s silence. It was followed by another one minute silence at 48.5 km, the distance at which Bjorg got off the track after a moment of hesitation & the tragedy took place.
Cyclist from different teams were observed wearing black armbands, a sign of mourning at Bjorg’s death. The teams also led the stage turn-wise before handing over the stage to Lotto-Soudal team.
The grief-ridden team said in a statement that Bjorg had a playful determination & was admired by his team-mates & staff for his ethics, humility and talent. Since his participation in the 2016 cycling season, Bjorg was being called with the words such as Pocket Climber, Rough Diamond, Puncher and Grand Tour Hope.
The riders & the staff of Lotto-Soudal thanked everyone who expressed their sympathy & conveyed their heartfelt condolences in the typically hard & competitive sports world.
Bjorg Lambrecht is the second professional cyclist who died this year. The first tragic incident of year 2019 was the death of Dutchman Robbert de Greef. He died of a cardiac arrest in the Omloop van de Braakman.
